Buying a dog buggy: what should you look for?

Buying a dog buggy: what should you look for?

A dog buggy is an investment for years to come: it needs to carry your dog safely and comfortably, handle walks on different terrain, and fold and transport easily. With so many models and trims on the market, it isn't always clear what to look for. In this guide we cover the seven key things to check, so you can make an informed choice.

Dog on the grass outdoors

1. Your dog's weight and size

This is the most important criterion. Every dog buggy has a maximum load capacity, usually specified across two or three sizes. Don't cut it close: a buggy that just barely handles your dog's maximum weight offers less comfort and shortens the fabric's lifespan. If in doubt, size up — especially if your dog is still growing.

2. The cot's interior dimensions

Besides weight, the cot's interior space matters just as much. Your dog needs to be able to sit up, lie comfortably and turn around. Measure your dog's length from nose to tail base and their height at the shoulder, and compare that against the manufacturer's interior dimensions — not just the maximum weight.

3. Where will you mainly walk?

If you mostly walk on paved city paths and shopping streets, standard air tyres are fine. If you regularly head into forests, onto gravel paths or unpaved roads, a trim with off-road tyres and a coarser tread is a real plus — giving you more grip and a smoother ride over uneven ground.

4. Weight and foldability of the buggy itself

A dog buggy weighs several kilos on its own — look at the combined weight of the frame and cot, especially if you'll be lifting it in and out of the car or onto public transport often. Also check the folded size: a buggy that folds down compactly in one motion fits into a car boot or storage space far more easily than one you need two hands to take apart.

5. Material and weather resistance

Standard polyester is fine for dry use, but a water-repellent, OEKO-TEX®-certified fabric keeps your dog drier during a sudden shower and is easier to clean. Anyone after the most premium feel can opt for a silicone leather trim: weather-resistant, scratch-resistant and wipeable with a damp cloth, with the look of genuine leather.

6. Safety standards

Check whether the buggy is certified to the European safety standard EN 1888-2 — the same standard that applies to baby strollers — a guarantee of structural safety and durability. Also look at practical safety details such as built-in safety tethers in the cot and a reliable handbrake, especially if you regularly walk on slopes.

7. Budget and trim level

Most dog buggy ranges offer several trims on the same frame: an entry model with the core features, a premium version with extra comfort and terrain features, and sometimes a luxury top version with exclusive materials. Decide first which features you actually need (off-road tyres, a stand lock, water-repellent fabric) before opting for the most expensive trim.
