You know the feeling: a dog crate sliding across the boot during an emergency stop, or a dog riding loose on the back seat. ISOFIX solves that — it's the same technology that has anchored child seats directly and securely to the car for years, and it's now being used for pet car seats too. In this article we explain exactly what ISOFIX is, why it's safer than a seatbelt or a loose crate, and what to look for in an ISOFIX car seat for your dog or cat.

1. What exactly is ISOFIX?
ISOFIX is an international standard (ISO 13216) for anchor points that clip a seat directly onto your car's bodywork — without using the seatbelt at all. Instead of placing a seat loose and securing it with the seatbelt, sturdy metal latches click directly into anchor points built into the car itself. Since February 2013, these ISOFIX anchor points have been mandatory in all new passenger cars sold in Europe.
For child seats, this system has existed since the late 1990s. That same technology is now being applied to pet car seats: instead of transporting your dog or cat loose in the boot or secured with a simple strap, the car seat clips directly and securely onto the car itself.
2. Why is ISOFIX safer than a seatbelt or a loose crate?
A seatbelt is designed for people, not for a dog carrier or crate — getting the tension and position consistently right is difficult, and with an incorrect installation the seat can still shift or tip. A loose crate in the boot is even more vulnerable: without a fixed anchor, it can shoot forward in a collision and injure both your pet and the other occupants.
ISOFIX largely eliminates that human installation error: the rigid latches only click into place one way, directly into the vehicle's anchor points. In a collision, the force is absorbed directly by the car's bodywork instead of by a loose seat or an over-slack belt. Clear green indicators on the car seat also confirm the connection is correct — so you know everything is properly secured before you set off.
3. What is ECE R129 and why does that standard matter?
ECE R129 (also known as i-Size) is the newest European safety standard for child seats, replacing the older R44/04 standard. The key difference: R129 adds a mandatory side-impact test, uses more advanced crash-test dummies, and classifies seats by height rather than just weight.
There's currently no official, legally mandatory European crash-test standard specifically for pet car seats. That's why TAVO chooses to have every Maeve, Hendrick and Dupree II car seat tested against that same ECE R129 standard used for child seats — with the same test equipment and crash-test dummies. That's a deliberately higher bar than what's legally required for pet products, and one of only a few brands in this category that does so consistently.
4. How to recognize a good ISOFIX car seat for your pet
- Integrated latches, no loose base — a built-in ISOFIX lock is more stable and less error-prone than a separate base station you have to fit yourself.
- Clear safety indicators — green markers that confirm the latches are correctly clicked in, so you never have to guess.
- Independently crash-tested — ask which standard a car seat was tested against, and by whom. A manufacturer that states this explicitly (such as ECE R129) is more transparent than one that only claims to be "safe."
- Side-impact protection (SIP) — extra padding or a dedicated SIP guard around your pet reduces the risk in a side-on collision.
- The right size for your pet — a car seat that's too small or too large offers less protection, even if the ISOFIX system itself is sound.
5. TAVO's ISOFIX solutions
All three TAVO car seats have integrated ISOFIX latches with no loose base, and are crash-tested to ECE R129:
- TAVO Maeve — the flagship, in three sizes for pets up to 18 kg, from €379
- TAVO Hendrick — a car seat and flexible carrier in one, for pets up to 20.4 kg, from €319
- TAVO Dupree II — the only one of the three that's also allowed in the airplane cabin, from €269
Not sure which of the three suits your dog or cat best? In an upcoming article we'll put the Maeve, Hendrick and Dupree II side by side in detail.
In Belgium and the Netherlands you're legally required to secure your dog in the car. An ISOFIX car seat is the most direct and sturdy anchoring option you can choose. When installing it, always follow the manual for both your vehicle and your car seat, and check before every trip that the indicators confirm a correct, secure connection.
