To remain eligible for the warranty, the manufacturer sets a few conditions: Cleaning: Use only water and a mild detergent. Never use chemicals like bleach or abrasive cleaners; these affect the UV stabilisers in the fabric, voiding the warranty. Tension: The sail must be correctly tensioned. A flapping sail causes mechanical damage (wear and tear), which is not covered under the UV warranty. Heat sources: Keep the fabric away from open flames or barbecues.

All colours offer the same 95% UV protection, but colour does influence how warm it feels underneath. Darker colours absorb more heat in the fabric itself, which under intense sun can result in slightly higher radiant warmth beneath the sail. Lighter shades tend to feel cooler as they absorb less heat. Equally important is ventilation: wind and air circulation play a major role in how comfortable the temperature under a shade sail actually feels. A well-positioned sail — with sufficient space for airflow — often makes more difference than colour choice alone. In short: for maximum coolness, combine a lighter colour with an installation that promotes good ventilation.

The Commercial Grade is the heaviest and most durable shade sail in the Coolaroo range. It uses 340 gsm HDPE fabric — significantly heavier than standard residential shade sails at 200 gsm. It also features marine-grade 316 stainless steel corner rings, double-stitched reinforced edges and a 15-year warranty on fabric and UV resistance.

No — the open-weave HDPE fabric allows water to pass through. This is intentional: it prevents water pooling and maintains breathability. The fabric is fully weather-resistant and dries quickly after rain. For fully waterproof cover, a solid canopy would be needed.

The sail comes with pre-attached marine-grade 316 stainless steel corner rings. You will need to provide your own posts or wall brackets, turnbuckles, carabiners and wire or rope for tensioning. We recommend installing at a 20-30° angle for optimal water runoff and tension.

Measure the area you want to shade and add approximately 0.5–1m per side for attachment points. A 5.4×5.4m square shade sail typically covers approximately 4.5×4.5m underneath. When in doubt, choose a size larger.
