Walking in the park or trying out a new toy with your dog? It's easy to forget that your dog sees the world literally differently than you do. It's a common myth that dogs only see in black and white, but that's not quite right.
Dogs are dichromats. While humans have three types of cones in their eyes (for red, green, and blue), dogs only have two. Their vision is similar to red-green color blindness in humans.
-
What they see clearly: Blue and Yellow. These colors stand out vividly to dogs.
-
What they struggle with: Red, Orange, and Green. These colors appear as shades of yellowish-brown or grey to them.
Tip for Owners: A bright red ball in green grass is nearly invisible to a dog’s eyes. If you want to make your dog happy, choose blue toys! Blue offers the highest contrast against almost any outdoor background.
